May OwlCrate Unboxing and Review

Hey Book Nerds!!

So I was going to do an unboxing on my YouTube channel, but upload schedules have made that a little complicated if I still want to get the MidYear Freak Out Tag up. Thus here is my present to you, a review of OwlCrate’s May box.

Note: I am not an OwlCrate affiliate. I have no financial incentives. They, sadly, don’t know I exist. I just love them.

May’s theme was a Rebel with a Cause. It came with TWO books, four bookish goodies for around the house, and the exclusive enamel pin. Let’s start with the bookish goodies, then the pin, and then the books.

The first item was a beautiful wooden magnet, created by Juniper and Ivy Designs, that says “Never allow yourself to believe you should remain silent!” This is from The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, which I need to read. The magnet is strong, but not obnoxiously so and is very pretty even if I’m not a florals person.

The second item was a set of pot holders with a quote from Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston, designed by Little Inklings Design. I haven’t read the book, but it sounds interesting. Simple with just a background and white lettering against a black background, they are sturdy and do their job well. Are they revolutionary? No. Are they a nice bookish addition? Yes.

Third, we got a beautiful set of vinyl stickers with quotes from a number of authors, books, and genres. They were designed by Nerdy Ink. I have one on my planner and two on planners and journals. They’re good quality, stick well and have withstood my clumsiness, which is a feat. (Sorry about the quality of the picture, had to take a screen capture from my video.)

The final bookish goody was a stainless steel straw set with a canvas bag and cleaning tools. The canvas bag is An Ember in the Ashes inspired designed by @paperbackbones. They have several shapes and I really like how environmentally friendly they are. I’ve been looking into a set for a while and this makes it easy.

Now to the pin. It was designed by Pennyslug Design and inspired by a memory-holding stone that is featured in one of the books! The quality for the pins is always amazing and it looks great next to my other pins.

The book for May was Zoraida Cordova’s Incendiary. As a Robari, Renata Convida has a rare and powerful gift that allows her to take memories. Kidnapped as a child, she has been forced to use this gift against her own people, the Moria. Renata is recruited as a Whisper, a spy for the rebel forces against the crown, but she isn’t trusted or even liked by the Whispers. When the boy she loves is captured by the Crown, it is up to her to return to the palace that she escaped, gain the trust of the court, and save her people.

Incendiary is based on medieval Spain and I am very excited to read it. The exclusive OwlCrate cover is beautiful as always. It is signed by the author and included a letter from the author. I will update you after I read.

The second book for May was Witchy by Ariel Slamet Ries. This is a graphic novel from Oni Press that tells the story of a witch kingdom named Hyalin, where the longer your hair, the stronger your magic. However, if your hair is too long then you are now an enemy of the state and are killed in a witch burning. I’m very very excited to read this and if I didn’t have a forever long TBR for June I would read it now.

Overall, I would give this OwlCrate box four out of five owls. There’s nothing really wrong with it, but I have received items from the same fandoms before and am hoping to see some variation in the future.
